Jonathan Grant High School

Language Department

As a member of the family of this great institution, the Language Department is honoured to join in its 25th year celebrations. The department started with three members of staff at the beginning of the school in 1980, and still has two members from the original group.

Our main curriculum has expanded to include ROSE, SSC and CXC examinations here. This is in keeping with the Ministry of Education's policies and to benefit students in their preparations for the world of work and thir quest for higher education.

In 2000 the school was rated as the top achiever in Language and Communication in the SSC examinations among reformed Secondary Schools.

The Mission Statement of the department is:
to enhance the intellectual and social skills of students via an extensive language curriculum which seeks to strengthen student's communication skills whilst recognizing that students' potential varies and that a variety of instructional material and reading techniques should be employed by qualified personnel to cater to the particular needs of learners.

In keeping with this statement, the teachers in the department continue to motivate students to strive for excellence by utilizing effective teaching strategies, and working closely together from grade 7 to 11 for continuity and success.

This is the basis for success now and in the future.
