Jonathan Grant Past Student Association

Marsden Dennis, President of the Past Student Association |
Welcome Message
A very warm welcome to all past students of Jonathan Grant High
School. I extend an invitation to you, our graduates to join the
Past Student Association and be a part of a network of friends.
This website will make us more accessible to members and help to
reunite a number of students who has lost contact with their friends
after graduation. It also serves as a medium to educate both past
and present students of Jonathan Grant High about the Association.
My objective is to extend membership throughout Canada, the United
States of America and England, by forming several chapters of the
Past Student Association in these countries. With the collective
and financial support from each chapter, we will be able to undertake
large scale projects and also institute and sustain educational
programmes (eg: a mentorship programme).
It is also my intention to institute a monthly training session
for various students at Jonathan Grant High. The purpose of this
session will be to build camaraderie between past and present students,
to enlighten them of the rich History of our school, explain the
role of the Association and to extend invitations to prospective
graduates.
I challenge you to play your part in paving the path of success
for our school and its pupils. Join the Past Student Association
and support our efforts, as together we can achieve much.
I look forward to meeting you at our next meeting.
Mr. Marsden Dennis
President of the Past Student Association

former students throughout the world.

and to organize projects placing emphasis on building camaraderie

students of Jonathan Grant High.
Our History
The Jonathan Grant Past Student Association was formed in August 1995. It was created with the intention of maintaining contact with and updating past students about current activities of the school. As a result, a group of past students started pooling resources and established a fund for special projects. In December of that year, the group hosted a school fete and the proceeds were used to pave the parking lot at the main office of the school.
Some of the founding members of the Past Student Association were Mr. Damion Thompson, Mr. Conroy Griffiths, Mr. Alladin Richards, Ms. Andrea Rose, Ms. Karen Herraman and Ms. Tiona Baker.
Mr. Damion Thompson was elected as the first president of the Past Student Association. He served for one year (1995 - 1996). Subsequently, Ms. Tiona Baker was elected as president of the Association for a period of eight years (1997 - 2004) and Mr. Alexander Parkes was the first Chairman to represent the board of the Past Student Association.
The Association has been involved in several Labour Day projects including :
- Painting of chalk boards, welding of chairs and desks, and the white washing of curve walls.
- Erecting a wooden picket fence around the garden at the main entrance.
Reunion Functions
Two successful reunion functions were hosted by the Past Student Association. Both were held at the Hilton Kingston Hotel in December 1998 and November 2000.
Donations
Since November 2000 the Past Student Association has been donating two plaques to students at their Annual Prize Giving functions for achievements in the following areas:
- Excellence in academics and sports
- Excellence in co-curricular activities and academics.
Occasionally, the requirements for the areas of achievements are adjusted.
The Past Student Association has also donated plaques to teachers for their contribution to education and their support of the Association. These teachers are:
- Mr. Alexander Parkes
- Mrs. B. A. Cameron
- Mrs. Patricia Whittle
The Association donated a gift basket and a cash prize of $5,000.00 to the Most Congenial Contestant at the Miss Jonathan Grant contest in February 2005. The decision was later taken by the Board of the Association to make this donation on an annual basis.
Educational Projects
In our pursuit to serve the school and the community, we invited two radio stations to host their programs at our school in December 2003 and March 2004. These programmes were:
- Fame 95 FM (Paula-Ann Porter)- "Fame School Rules"
- RJR 94 FM (Tricia Spence) -"Schools link"
The students got an opportunity to experience live broadcasting, advertising and operating as a disc jockey. The Principal also got a chance to promote the school, as the school of choice in St. Catherine.
The Past Student Association has also invited representatives from Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U), to make presentations on career development and self confidence.
The current Board members of the Past Student Association are as follows:
- Mr. Marsden Dennis (President)
- Mr. Moses Phillips (Vice President)
- Ms. Camiele Henry (Treasurer)
- Mr. Rashford Thompson (Public Relation Officer)
- Ms. Nadine Bernard (Secretary)
Mr. Moses Phillips represents the Association by serving on the Board of Governors of Jonathan Grant High. Ms. Ava Henry previously served in this capacity.
